Introduction and Application Fields of Various Hydrogenated Hydrocarbon Resins
application of hydrogenated hydrocarbon resin

Petroleum-Based Resin (Petroleum Resin, C5/C9 Resin, Hydrocarbon Resin):

Petroleum resin (also known as aliphatic/aromatic hydrocarbon resin).Derived from petroleum cracking byproducts (C5 and C9 fractions), this thermoplastic oligomer (MW: 300–3000) is produced through pretreatment, polymerization, and distillation.

Hydrogenated Petroleum Resin (Hydrogenated C5/C9 Resin, Saturated Hydrocarbon Resin):Produced by hydrogenating petroleum resin, converting unsaturated hydrocarbons into saturated ones, enhancing color stability, odor reduction, and weather resistance.

Main types: C5 hydrogenated resin , C9 hydrogenated resin and DCPD Hydrogenated Resin

C5 Hydrogenated Hydrocarbon Resin (Aliphatic Hydrogenated Resin)

Feedstock: C5 fraction from ethylene cracking.

Synthesis: Cationic polymerization of dienes and mono-olefins.

Key Properties:

Density: ~1.0 g/cm³

Solubility: Dissolves in benzene, toluene, xylene, and solvent oils; insoluble in water.

Appearance: White/yellow granular solid, brittle, low dust, non-toxic, odorless, non-flammable (eco-friendly).

Advantages:

Superior tackifying performance, polymer compatibility, thermal/UV stability.

Enhances adhesive bonding strength in hot-melt adhesives (HMA) and pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA).

Applications:

Adhesives: HMA, PSA, bookbinding adhesives, packaging adhesives.

Construction: Architectural coatings, decorative films, structural sealants.

Automotive: Tire compounding, automotive assembly adhesives.

Paints & Coatings: Road marking paint, colored asphalt, industrial coatings (improves drying, water/chemical resistance, gloss).

Medical & Packaging: Blood bags, IV bags, flexible packaging films (enhances heat resistance & transparency).

Consumer Goods: Footwear adhesives, hygiene products (diapers, sanitary pads).

Industrial Uses: Rubber compounding, plastic modification, optical materials.

C9 Hydrogenated Aromatic Resin (Hydrogenated C9 Resin, Water-White Resin)

Low-MW, semi-hydrogenated thermoplastic resin with high clarity, heat resistance, and low odor.

Key Features:

Excellent compatibility with EVA, SBC, SEBS, APAO, POE polymers.

Solvent-based tackifier for CR, SBS, SIS, NR rubber adhesives.

Applications:

Adhesives: Hot-melt PSAs, sealants, non-woven adhesives.

Inks & Paints: Printing inks, industrial coatings (boosts color development, drying speed, gloss).

Plastics & Rubber: Processing aid, nucleating agent for polyolefins, foam modifier (PE/EVA).

Construction: Waterproof coatings, anti-corrosion paints, asphalt modifiers.

Specialty Uses: Film props (“fake glass”), paper sizing agents, ink binders.

DCPD Hydrogenated Resin (Dicyclopentadiene-Based Resin, High-Performance Tackifier)

Synthesized from DCPD via specialized polymerization & hydrogenation.

Properties:

White/light yellow, high softening point, excellent solvent compatibility (esters, polyurethanes).

Epoxy modifier: Reduces shrinkage, enhances adhesion, pigment wetting, film leveling.

Applications:

High-End Rubber: Radial tires, racing tires, inner tubes.

Coatings: Marine paints, epoxy/polyester coatings, industrial finishes.

Inks: Gravure/copperplate inks (improves printability, drying, brightness).

General Industry: Automotive assembly, packaging, footwear adhesives, hygiene products.
